Manulife your group renewals SUCK

Brutal
I have been contacted by Standard Life in the past for kind words I wrote here on their behalf. Apparently they have internet monkeys scouring the inter-tubes looking for any reference of their company name, so here is hoping Manulife is listening.

I've recived three group insurance renewals in the last few days from Manulife. They have all sucked, hard. The rates they are proposing are a joke. I am used to Manulife and other carriers trying to get away with a little bit of extra fat on a renewal, but these have been a joke. Clients with good claims have been hit with increases when a decrease should have been provided. God help the clients with bad claims, they might as well just pack up and go home. I dont know if Manulife is trying to lose business or what?

For example: I'm working on a renewal right now which takes effect March 1 2010. Carriers usually provide the claims and premiums paid for the past year less a month. So the March renewal should have March 1 2009 to January 31, 2010. Maybe 2 months of lag, so claims too the end of December. Manulife's renewal only has experience to October 31, 2009. What about November or December? I know it takes time to prepare a renewal and the claims aren't always up to date but October? Come on, you can do better.

Same group, dental premiums paid $10,411.20; total claims incurred $6,568.92 or 63% of premium. Manulife says their administration is 25% of premium and trend is 8%.

Sooooo 63% plus 25% plus 8% = 96% of premium paid.

I see this and expect a 4% decrease in rates. What does Manulife ask for? 10.95% INCREASE, are you insane? That's a 15% spread who are you trying to fool?

Same thing for another group, claims are 96% of premium, ok thats bad, claims are high, the target was 75% so they are 21% over, an increase is justified. Trend is 15% for health, admin is again 25%.

96% plus 15% plus 25% = 136% of premium, so a 36% increase is justified.

Manulife wants 48.33% increase. NO just NO. I talk to an underwriter and they inform me they have already reduced the rate internally, the original increase was going to be north of 60%. I'm dumbfounded. Manulife originally calculated that they needed nearly double the rate increase I consider fair.

Manulife, if your reading this, PLEASE look at your underwriting, the rates you are coming up with are totally out to lunch. There is no way I can support rate increases like this, it is hard enough that I have to fight you every renewal to get a fair rate but when you are asking for colossal rate increases when none is justified, the client is just going to go elsewhere. You are a good carrier, one of the best, your admin and website rock, you pay claims quickly and accurately, but your pricing sucks.

Brutal.

  1. 96% is going to get hit hard no matter what way you look at it. The insurers seem to be using "trend" as a crutch. People don't use double the drugs they used 5 years ago but if experience is perfectly on in a theoretical group they want double the health premium due to "trend"....

  2. Drug "trend" changes depending on who you ask. Each insurer, calculates their trend based on what they see in their own book of business. My rule of thumb is about 15%-ish.

Each group should also have a "credibility rating" which is basically a measure of how much we can trust the claims experience to predict future claims. When a group is 100% credible (usually at 100 life years of experience, 3 years of no turnover in a 33 life group, or 1 year with no turnover in a 100 life group)then trend should no longer apply. Neither should the "book rates" but the insurance company still applies them in the renewal. If a group is 100% credible then the change in claims over a two year period SHOULD be trend. IE: If a group claims $50,000 in drugs in year 1 and $55,000 in drugs in year 2 and there was no turnover their trend is 10% not the more typical 15%.

People ARE using more drugs each year, that is easy to see. In aggregate the trend is probably 15% per year. But some groups are using way less and they should be rewarded as such. This is why I do my best to get fair renewals which reflect the real world not any actuaries model.

  3. Manulife SUCKS!! We have been forced to use this crappy company for our benefits.....they are nothing but a bunch of screw ups. Every time I submit a claim I have to FIGHT to get my money. Every person you talk to has a different answer....and NONE of them know what the hell they are doing. All I know is that they try to keep YOUR MONEY as long as possible, delaying payment as much as possible....to pad their pockets at the end of the year....WITH YOUR MONEY!!

  4. I agree with the comment posted November 26, 2010 @ 9:47 AM. Yet again, I have to call Manulife for yet another screw up in my benefits. I have called no less than 3 times for denying a particular health claim that they keep telling me I have not reached my limit for. Then they pay me, then they deny me, then they pay me. It's the same practitioner and I still have coverage. WTF?! I'm getting the run around ALL the time. Speak to a different Rep each time and get a different answer each time. Don't they keep PROPER records? So they tell me I have coverage, I go get treatment, then they deny payment saying I've reached my max. WTF?! I spent just over $100, with coverage of over $400 left, and it gets denied?! I've called them so many times for these same screw ups. All year long. Now it's the end of the year and I KNOW they are hoping I'll forget and the new year will come and it will be too late. Everyone I talk to in my company has the same complaints. They obviously are trained to deny claims ee's are entitled to for the sole purpose of saving the client money. So....why give us benefits in the first place just to constantly deny what you tell us we are entitled to?!?! It's just a game to them. I am so FUCKING FURIOUS ! and FED UP with this !!!!! But I am NOT letting it go!

I understand your frustration. I would recommend talking to the person in charge of your benefits plan at your work. They can speak with your plan advisor who should be able to sort out the claim for you.

Failing that if you are in BC I would be happy to provide my services to your company and get things sorted out.

A last pointer, keep copies of all recipes you submit as well as a record of when you called, who you spoke too and their responce. It helps people in my possition out immensly.

  6. My son requires two implants, do to the fact that he did not have adult teeth below his baby teeth, with the baby teeth being half the height of adult teeth, the surrounding teeth were not supported properly.. so baby teeth were extracted for implants or a bridge(which was not recommended, son is 19 yrs.old) My wife's insurer Great West does not cover implants but will let her apply bridgework coverage for implants as an alternative. My insurer Manulife also does not cover implants, does cover bridgework but will not bend to apply bridgework coverage to the implants. Thanks for the help Manulife I don't need the 7 grand anyway!

  8. Thee was an anonymous post above critiquing their experience with a disability claim. I have removed it as the poster disclosed they are currently suing Manulife. I know for a fact Manulife regularly tracks post and comments on my blog and I would hate for them to see the post and work out who posted it and use it in court. So anonymous poster, I feel your pain and know your situation all too well. Please don't think of the deleted post as censorship but rather as trying to protect your ass in court. Good luck

  10. I couldn't agree more!! Manulife sucks!! Every time I make a claim they try to deny me every time. Everyone I talk to from manulife gives me a different answer. I'm never allowed to talk to the floor manager no matter how hard I persist, it's so frustrating. That company is such a joke!

If you have some specifics as to the reason for decline I might be able to help you out. With every declined claim you get a statement that will indicate why it was declined, usually called an "explanation of benefit". If the policy you have does indeed cover whatever you are claiming it should be able to be made right. All policies are different and some times there are weird exceptions, and details, insurance companies LOVE details. Sometimes the details get in the way but there is an argument that can be made to the insurer to cover the claim. Sometimes the policy expressly excludes a claim and then you are out of luck. Feel free to give me a call and I might be able to shed some light on it. No cost of course.

  13. Hi Robert, I'm a benefits advisor in Alberta and admire your willingness to "out" the flaws of a insurer you support. I'm glad you hold them accountable, as do I. I've been told by an inside wholesaler with Manu that renewals are simply spit out of a computer and that its our job to make sure they're fair. It was so disappointing to hear that no one at Manu really reviews the rates they are asking for. Yes, it certainly is our job to check and double-check requested rates. However, there are so many lazy part-time benefits advisors that do not advocate for their clients. If Manu was a person, i would reject them as a friend for a lack of integrity. How can i ask clients/friends to partner with them? The embarrassment and frustration is hardly worth it. Every insurer has their issues, but Manu can suck my ass. Are they too big to fail? I'm just so glad i didn't buy stock. I'm glad my GMWB isn't with them. I'm sorry i have to defend them to clients. Am i done venting? Actually, yes I am. Thanks for providing a forum! : )

  14. I have also heard that the renewal are all computer generated. My rep told me he personally deal with 250-500 renewals per month.

As long as you have a broker keeping Manulife honest they are good to deal with. If you don't they will take you for a ride.
